Time is running out in Spring Training for the Missoula PaddleHeads as the team completes its final workouts ahead of the start of the season. Decisions loom on the final roster that will come in the coming hours. A lot of the headlines on Saturday surrounded the pitchers mound with some familiar names seeing action in an intersquad exhibition.
Highlighting this group were names like Ryan Wentz, Mark Timmins, and Matthew Taubensee. Newly signed arms like Thomas Reisinger, and Rolando Gutierrez also took the hill for the 2nd time this spring. All in all this group continued to what has been a successful week in camp for this group.
Wentz has looked like one of the strongest pitchers overall in camp this week which is very promising. After his 2025 campaign, the veteran will now look to be a leader of the staff. The 2nd year PaddleHeads surely looked like an ace in his 4 innings of work on the hill.
Outside of a solo home run from fellow returnee Kishon Frett, the PaddleHeads offense was held quiet in Wentz's time on the hill. His ability to mix locations and speed with his fastball and cutter has been a highlight keeping hitters off balance.
Reisinger had his best outing of the spring in 4 innings in his start. His ability to control a high velocity fastball is a strength. This should lead to a lot of strikeouts and ground balls when he has his stuff working. That was on display Saturday in 4 spotless innings of work.
Gutierrez, and Timmins worked 3 scoreless frames combined. Gutierrez has impressed this week as a newly signed talent for the PaddleHeads as a deceptive left hander. This skillset has allowed him to keep offensive numbers down, inducing a lot of groundballs. The native of the Dominican Republic worked through a pair of scoreless innings to continue that trend Saturday. Timmins followed suit.
The PaddleHeads Franchise Player for 2026 has worked a normal load throughout the spring and has looked strong. This is promising considering the way his season ended in 2025 due to a ruptured achilles in only his 2nd outing of the season. You wouldn't know it based on his performance so far in camp with his pitch velocity and movement. Timmins pitched a scoreless half inning Saturday.
After a week of Spring Training things will now start to focus fully on Opening Day and the final roster. The PaddleHeads will hold their final workout of Spring Camp Sunday morning before heading starting the trek to the Bay Area. The PaddleHeads will complete a leg of the trip on Sunday before arriving in Oakland on Monday evening.
Stay tuned for updates from the road, and announcements on the final roster. All teams in the Pioneer League must submit their Opening Day roster by Sunday evening. The PaddleHeads will open their season with a 3-game set opposite the Oakland Ballers on Tuesday. First pitch from Northern California is scheduled for 6:35 Pacific.
